In a few minutes, you will receive a call that will ask you a few questions to pre-qualify you for a study. If qualified you will be connected directly to a study doctor's office near you.
Gout is urate crystal-induced arthritis, which affects approximately 8 million Americans. Gout is often accompanied by other health problems. Local doctors have joined a nationwide research study and they need your help.
To qualify for one of our research studies you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age,
- Have a history of gout, and
- Have experienced a gout flare-up within the last year.
Other pre-qualifying criteria must also be met. No insurance is required.
Qualified participants in this research study will receive all study-related procedures at no cost and may be compensated for time and travel.
About Research Studies
In order to provide new drugs to the public, pharmaceutical companies must test their investigational drugs very carefully through medical research studies (also called "clinical trials"). The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) thoroughly reviews the data collected in these studies before approving new medications. Once the FDA approves a drug, many pharmaceutical companies continue to conduct research on the approved drug to collect ongoing safety and effectiveness data.
Study doctors are required to follow strict rules to protect the safety of the people who volunteer to participate in clinical trials. All researchers must follow a detailed plan called a protocol, which explains all study procedures and has been reviewed and approved by an independent board (or group of people) that helps protect the rights of all study participants. Additionally, before enrolling individuals into a study, researchers must fully explain the study to the individual and answer any questions he or she may have. Participation in a clinical trial is voluntary, and individuals may withdraw from the study at any time for any reason.

We are actively recruiting participants who have gout and a history of heart disease for one of our other studies. You can learn more here.
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you meet the following criteria:
- If male, you are at least 50 years of age.
- If female, you are at least 55 years of age.
- You have a history of gout.
- You have a history of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease, such as a heart attack, unstable angina, stroke, or complications from diabetes.
Importance of Clinical Research
Clinical research is important for advancing knowledge of all disease and developing potential future medications. Before a medication is available in a pharmacy, it must progress through the clinical research process. For conditions like gout, it is important to continue researching potential medication options.
Participation in this study is completely voluntary. To see if you may qualify, click here.
